On the eve of the forthcoming Council of Europe and the December Summit of the Eurozone, the European Commission presents measures to strengthen the role of the euro in a changing world.
The Commission described the strategic importance of the euro and the need to ensure that the single currency plays its full role in the international arena. Taking advantage of the support of future decisions aimed at strengthening the European Economic and Monetary Union, ending the Banking Union and advancing the Capital Markets Union, the euro must develop its role on the world stage and reflect the political, economic and financial weight in the euro area. To this end, the Commission outlines in a communication adopted today the benefits of such a strengthening of the international role of the euro for the EU and the international financial system and proposes initiatives to increase the role of the common currency.
